The town of Macclesfield is ancient in origin and its history is only briefly outlined. Prior to the Norman Conquest it was the territory of Saxon Edwin, Earl of Chester and is therefore mentioned in the Doomesday Book. The Norman rulers of the time created a considerable forest in the area and so Macclesfield and Macclesfield Forest were considered to be one and the same.
In 1261 it was granted a Royal Charter by Prince Edward of Wales, Earl of Chester, constituting Macclesfield a free Borough allowing trade and commercial exchange for 120 Burgesses (men of substance) in the town.
By 1745 silk and button making were well established and the town began to prosper. Charles Roe was a fore-runner and in 1756 he introduced machinery into his mill, bringing the Industrial Revolution to the town. Others followed suit and during the course of the next one hundred years the town became the acknowledged centre of the country's silk industry.
Regrettably the silk industry declined and large multi-nationals have replaced the mill industry thus ensuring the survival of the town. In 1990 Macclesfield was one of the top towns in the country for investment, being easily accessible from land, sea and air.
